About Mondo Zen Retreats
Hollow Bones Zen retreats, now called Mondo Zen Sesshin, are a modern adaptation of the traditional Japanese Rinzai Zen retreats. All practices during the 7-day, and 3-day retreats offered by Hollow Bones are done in English in order to facilitate direct, personal understanding of the methods and goals. In addition to traditional Zazen (sitting meditation) and Koan study, Yoga or Internal Martial Arts is part of the daily practice. In this school of Zen, it is essential that you awaken, and there is a fierce, yet compassionate, insistence that you do so now. Meditating and sitting quietly is not enough! You must realize your inherent freedom. You must answer the question, “Who are you?” from the purest depths of realization, moving far beyond the normal modes of speculative thought. The Hollow Bones retreats offer men and women the opportunity to experience the “answer” to this question in a way that transcends all hope, fear, and doubt. Our retreats are co-ed unless specifically described on the booking page.
Mondo Zen Sesshin
We have enhanced our Hollow Bones/Mondo Zen retreat practice. The daily schedule includes morning & evening services, deep zazen practice, Dokusan (interview with Roshi), nature walks and short breaks for private reflection and Tai Chi, Qi Gong, or Yoga.
Our morning Dharma talk will now serve as an experiential koan dialog using our Mondo Zen™ Ego Deconstruction Protocol. In the afternoon we have added the Awareness Intervention Protocol, creating emotional koans. We have found that this modern koan approach is very effective in deepening our understanding, clearing our minds and transforming our habitual unconscious negative emotional reactions into conscious compassionate responses. These interactive inquiries allow for deep individual and group transformation.
During the retreat, we observe essential silence and ask that you plan your week to be free from outside communication and distractions. Cell phones, reading materials, computers and audio players are not allowed for the duration of the sesshin.
Retreats include accommodations and three organic vegetarian meals a day. Check information on individual retreats for specific details and costs. There is an opportunity to make an additional financial contribution at the end of each retreat.
